Tour Description

The Yatra via Simikot is a popular route for Indian pilgrims, as it is a relatively easier and quicker way to reach Mount Kailash compared to the traditional route via Nepal.

As a popular form of access, Indian Pilgrims travel to Rupaidiya border of western Nepal to cross into Nepalese town of Nepalgunj. Alternatively, if you arrive in Kathmandu, you can take a flight to Nepalgunj and further fly from Nepalgunj to Simikot

From Nepalgunj, pilgrims will take a flight to Simikot, a small town located in the Humla district of Nepal. The flight duration is 45 minutes to Simikot .This is where the actual pilgrimage begins. The journey from Simikot to Kailash Mansarovar involves crossing the Nepal-China border, trekking through scenic landscapes, and performing holy rituals. From Simikot we take a helicopter to reach teh Nepal-China border town names Hilsa and cross the border. Our destination for that day will Tibetan town of Taklakot where we will be driven. From Taklakot we drive towards Mansarovar.

The pilgrimage includes a visit to the sacred Lake Mansarovar, which is believed to be the source of four major rivers in Asia. Pilgrims will have the opportunity to perform a parikrama or circumambulation of the lake, which is believed to bring good karma and purify the soul.

The journey also includes a trek to the base of Mount Kailash, which is believed to be the abode of Lord Shiva. Pilgrims will trek through challenging terrain and high altitudes to reach the base of the mountain, where they will perform holy rituals and seek blessings.Throughout the journey, pilgrims will have the opportunity to interact with local people, taste local cuisine, and experience the unique culture of Nepal and Tibet. Between 1901 and 1904, southern Tibet became strategically important to the British Empire. The colonial era officials decided to encourage and assist religious pilgrimage to this lake and Kailash with comments such as "a devotee will be the pioneer of trade". By 1907, about 150 pilgrims a year visited this site, a number significantly higher than those in the 19th century. The number of Indian pilgrims grew to 730 by 1930. Pilgrimage road and facilities to this lake and Kailash were constructed by Indians, in cooperation with Tibetan monks and officials, along the route after 1930.[13]

Day 1 :

Arrival in Kathmandu

Upon arrival in Kathmandu, you will be greeted by our representative and transferred to your hotel. Spend the rest of the day resting and acclimatizing to the altitude.

Day 2 :

Kathmandu Sightseeing

After breakfast, enjoy a guided tour of some of Kathmandu's UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including Swayambhunath, Pashupatinath, and Boudhanath.

Day 3 :

Fly to Nepalgunj

Take a domestic flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, a city located in the western Terai plains of Nepal. Spend the night in Nepalgunj. Arrival at Nepalgunj. Transfer to Hotel in Nepalgunj OR drive to Surkhet (3hrs) and stay at Surkhet based on situation. Meal: Dinner at Nepalgunj Hotel | Hotel: Siddhartha

Day 4 :

Fly Nepalgunj – Simikot (2900m) – Overnight in Simikot

Early Morning – Flight Nepalgunj to Simikot (45m). Rest day at Simikot. Meal: Breakfast at Nepalgunj / Simikot, Lunch at Hilsa, Dinner at Taklakot | Hotel: New Potala Palace or Similar

Day 5 :

Heli to Hilsa (3700m) & Drive to Taklakot (3900m) – Overnight in Taklakot

Morning – Take Helicopter to Hilsa (20 min – 12kg weight limit) & wait for other members to arrive at Hilsa (since it is a group visa and everyone have to enter Tibet side in one group) Afternoon – From Hilsa drive to Purang border to Taklakot (27 km) and stay at Hotel. We will stay overnight at Taklakot. (On the way we have to pass upto 3 Checkpoints where checking might take upto 1 hr in each post) Meal: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner | Hotel: Hotel Himalaya, New Purang, Riverside or Similar

Day 6 :

At Taklakot (3900m) – Rest Day – Overnight in Taklakot

All Day – Entire day free for Acclimatization Meal: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Hotel: Hotel Himalaya, New Purang, Riverside or Similar

Day 7 :

Drive to Manasarovar Lake (4550m) – Overnight in Mansarovar

After Breakfast – Drive towards Mansarovar Lake (95 km). On the way you will have to pass the first checkpoint. Then after driving for 70 kms from Taklakot we will reach Rakshas Tal. On the right of Rakshas Tal you will see Gurla Mandhata Parvat & first view of Mount Kailash and Mansarovar lake. Drive from Rakshas Tal to Manasarovar Lake (25 km). Start Parikrama of Manasarovar Lake (90 km – 3hr by bus). Perform Puja. Meal: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Hotel: Mansarovar Lake Side Mud House

Day 08 :

1st Day of Parikrama – Drive to Darchen (4650m) & Yama Dwar & Trek to Dirapuk (4880m) – Overnight in Dirapuk

After Breakfast – Drive to Darchen (35 km – 1 hr) and Yama Dwar (8 km) – the starting point for Kora. We will trek to Dirapuk for 14 km. You will visit the North face of Mt. Kailash and touching the feet of Mt. Kailash (Charan Sparsha). Travelers who do not want to trek around (Parikrama) Mt. Kailash can go back to Darchen wait for rest of the group to arrive from Parikrama. Meal: Breakfast at Mansarovar, Lunch & Dinner on the way during Parikrama Hotel: Mud house on the way during Parikrama or Stay in Dormitory Guest House at Darchen NOTE: If you are not doing Parikrama, then you will still be waiting at Darchen (4650m)

Day 09 :

2nd Day of Parikrama – On toZuthulpuk (4670m) via Trek to Dolma La Pass (5700m) – Overnight in Zuthulpuk

After Breakfast – Trek from Dirapuk to Dolma La Pass (8 km). About 3 kms before reaching Dolma La Pass is steep hill and quite difficult to walk. Also descending from Dolma La Pass is the same for upto 3 km. While descending you can see Gaurikund on the right. After walking for about 2 – 3 hrs we will reach Phedi. After some rest we will start trek to Zuthulpuk (12 km trek for 6 hours). Meal: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Hotel: Stay at the Mud House (Zutulpuk) NOTE: If you are not doing Parikrama, then you will still be waiting at Darchen

Day 10 :

3rd Day of Parikrama – Trek to Darchen – Drive to Hilsa via Taklakot – Overnight in Hilsa / Simikot

After Breakfast – After short easy Trek (8 km – 3 hrs), we will reach our bus pick up point. Then drive to Darchen (3 kms) and merge with other members who were waiting. From there drive to Hilsa (also we will take helicopter to Simikot based on situation) Meal: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Hotel: Guest House

How fit do I need to be to do this trek?

Annapurna Base Camp is a Grade B or a moderately difficult trekking route. So any fit person can do this trek, even if you do not have any previous experience. You should be aware of what to expect and mentally prepare for it. Then, as long as you will too, you can.

How long do we walk every day when doing Annapurna Base Camp trekking?

On average, you walk about 4 to 6 hours per day. One or two days can be as less as 3hrs and one or two days can be as long as 7hrs.

What is the highest altitude reached in this trek?

The highest altitude reached is 4190m. This is the elevation of Annapurna Base Camp. ABC is the highest we will climb in this trek.

What about battery charging and hot shower facilities?

Yes, you can charge batteries en route. Charger should be brought. There are hot shower facilities as well. You may have to pay a certain amount for both ($1-$2). Negotiate. Also, a hot water facility could be free at a lower elevation.

Are there ATMs on the way to Annapurna Base Camp?

No. There are no ATMs on this trek route. You will have to draw enough cash in Pokhara or Kathmandu. There are a number of ATMs in these cities. Everything is paid in Nepali rupees. So money should be exchanged before the start of the trek.

What about internet access?

Yes. The Internet can be accessed in most places. Sometimes, there might be some technical problems. The Internet in Nepal is not as fast as you are used to and at times you can just lose connection.

Is it necessary to hire Guides/trekking agency for Annapurna Base Camp trekking?

Not really. It depends on you. If you want, ABC trekking can be done independently. You could hire a guide and a porter by yourself instead of going through an agency or not hire a guide at all. Although, not having a guide can be a little problematic during the offseason.

It really depends on you. Is it your first time in Nepal? How confident are you of being able to find your way around? How pressed on time are you? If you go through an agency, it will be costlier but everything will be planned. You will only have to come, trek and return.

How much do guides and porters cost?

For the Annapurna region, pay for guides range from $20 to $30 per day and porters take $15 to $25 per day.
